The effect of abusive behavior

abusive behavior in coupleThe person who is having a problem with alcohol/drugs is unable to see how their abusive behaviors are affecting their lives and the lives of their loved ones!

Once the invisible line into addiction has been crossed, the alcoholic/addict has to take on a defensive posture called denial in order to continue to drink/use.

Addiction is called the disease of denial because the abuser continues to use despite self-destructive behaviors, despite feeling guilty, and despite escalating problems with family, friends, and in the work place.  Denial keeps the self-protective covers of the addictive person focused on other people, other situations, and other issues which they perceive as the real problem and not themselves.
