It is not unusual for a person who has grown up in a home riffled with alcoholism or addiction to not notice or to repress a lot of those early painful memories. Trauma causes one to forget, often making the daily details of painful memories fuzzy and blurry. For many co-dependents, these memories can and will come flooding back when triggered in adulthood by a partner struggling with alcohol and drug abuse. The longer you watch the progressive nature of the disease, the more likely you are to repeat the same pattern you grew up with, responding and repeating the same co-dependent messages even if you promised yourself that it would not happen to you!
