A word many co-dependents will hear when they seek help is detachment. Several books have been written on how to detach with love, but what does it really mean? Detachment means that no matter what is going on in your life or the life of loved ones, you are able to remain free and happy. You are able to remain calm and poised in every situation.
In order to do this, one must understand the ways in which you can become physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually trapped in the circumstances of someone or something else. Once trapped, an array of negative emotions begin to ensue, i.e., upsets, frustrations, fear, anxiety, guilt, shame, worry, and anger, along with the unknown. These become the primary focus of your attention if you’re in a co-dependent relationship.
