Will your family’s legacy be your destiny? When I work with the alcoholic/addict it is not unusual to hear that they had one parent or both parents who were alcoholics or drug addicts. They may be able to describe several generations of family members with addictions. Some people automatically feel that it is their destiny because it is in the genes and there is nothing they can do about it. This becomes the excuse that they use to continue to consume the substance of choice.
While it is true that there is a genetic base in addiction, and if you have several generations of addicts, there is a likelihood that the pattern will continue. And a person’s risk of addiction is greater than someone who does not have these genes. The good news is that there is a way to respond to one’s genetic influences without becoming another statistic.
